"Health psychology is primarily concerned with people’s experiences of health and illness. Health psychologists use their knowledge of psychology and health to promote general well-being and understand physical illness. They are specially trained to help people deal with the psychological and emotional aspects of health and illness as well as supporting people who are chronically ill."
(British Psychological Society, 2021)
To be able to use the title ‘health psychologist’ we must be registered with and meet the high standards of the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). The HCPC are a regulator of health and care professions in the UK and their role is to protect the public. By law a health psychologist must be registered with the HCPC to work in the UK.
The British Psychological Society (BPS) is a registered charity and are responsible for promoting excellence and ethical practice in the application of the discipline of psychology.
When looking for a psychologist, it is important to see if they are registered with the HCPC and chartered by the BPS. Psychologists registered with both these organisations will have had the appropriate training to agreed standards and are held accountable for their practice
